Many Christians sincerely believe that a person should not experience anxiety disorders if he or she just has enough faith and trust in God. That is simply not true. This verse reminds us that God is greater than anything we will face in this world, and it assures us of the confidence we can enjoy when we stand before God someday. But it was not written as a pronouncement on anxiety disorders. In a similar vein, some Christians disparage the use of medications in treating anxiety disorders or other mental health problems.

In the same way, we ought not to look at those who take medication for anxiety as somehow deficient in their faith. If you know of someone who is dealing with an anxiety disorder, and they feel that the use of medications is somehow sinful or evidence of a lack of faith, urge them to reconsider. For some people, the use of medications is a lifeline, allowing them to function normally and helping them to reconnect with others and with God in ways that might not otherwise be possible.

Some people with anxiety disorders use alcohol or drugs to medicate themselves and relieve feelings of distress. Unfortunately, illicit drugs and alcohol are no more helpful for treating anxiety disorders than they would be for treating pneumonia. Alcohol and drugs can mask the symptoms of anxiety disorders, making diagnosis and treatment more difficult. In some people, they can worsen or actually cause anxiety.

Additionally, using drugs or alcohol to deal with anxiety increases risks for drug addiction or alcoholism. If someone uses drugs or alcohol to cope with an anxiety disorder, counsel them to speak to a qualified mental health professional. Substance abuse has only downsides, never an upside. Anxiety disorders are much more than simple jitters or nervousness; the feelings of fear and anxiety that accompany them can be debilitating. The good news is that help is available and these conditions can be managed with the proper combination of medical and psychological care and spiritual support.

Is There a Biblical Basis for Being Vegetarian?

While not discussed in detail above, this last element is extremely important, as anxiety disorders can challenge the notion that God is a loving Father who is trustworthy and cares for us and is in control of all things. If you know of someone who is dealing with an anxiety disorder, encourage them to consider the benefits of Christian counseling, pastoral care and the support of a strong faith community. Combined with other forms of care, these can help people struggling with anxiety to live a vibrant and effective life for Christ.

What marriage would look like if we actually followed the Bible | The Independent

It is about submission, exploration, discovery, and delight. It is for the glory of God and the comfort of mankind. Despite all of what the Scriptures say in support and celebration of human sexuality, the Bible makes it very clear that you can be fully and entirely human without ever having it. In fact, there are so many lifelong celibates in the Bible that some early Christians actually began to wonder if abstinence represented a sort of inside track to spiritual fulfillment.

They wrote to Paul and asked him about that very thing. In response to their question, he spoke about marriage as a general rule 1 Corinthians ; the need to be generous and reciprocal in the marriage bed 1 Corinthians and the need for married couples to have sex on a regular and consistent basis 1 Corinthians I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. Paul says that he wishes there were more lifelong celibates! He wishes there were more people who could do as he did — travelling the world, serving the Lord, feeding the flock and building up the people of God without worrying that he was neglecting his natural family.

Paul says that if he had his way there would be MORE people like that — but each has his own gift from God.

God gives to some the gift of marriage and to others, the gift of celibacy and Paul must submit to the Sovereign will of his Maker. So many people today define themselves by their sexuality. They ARE who they have sex with. The Bible says that a person is a human being because they were created in the image and likeness of God. Meaning, before you have sex — before you have anything — you have maximal value and significance before God! You are an image bearer!

You are a ruling creature; under God and over everything else. It means for starters that sex is natural for human beings, but not necessary. A person can live a full, blessed, rich, useful, meaningful, God-glorifying life without ever having sex with anyone. To many people in our culture, that would be the most surprising thing the Bible says about anything. The Bible says that marriage is good, sex is good, singleness is good and celibacy is good.

They are all precious gifts given according to the wisdom and timing of the Lord for his glory and our everlasting good. You can also find it on iTunes. Ciampa and Brian S. Accordance electronic ed. Among the most surprising revelations would be the following: 1. In the Book of Proverbs, the wise father instructs his son to: rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Proverbs —19 ESV Likewise in the New Testament, it says: Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled.

Hebrews ESV Sex between a husband and a wife is never a cause for shame. Husbands owe it to wives Many historians think that the most surprising thing the Bible says about sex is found in 1 Corinthians the husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. The Apostle Paul told his people: Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

In the very first chapter of the very first book it says: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Marijuana and Christianity: Is CBD Sinful?

Genesis —28 ESV God made them male and female and he told them to be fruitful and multiply. The Bible goes on to say: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Jesus never had it. Nor did Jeremiah. Or John the Baptist. Or Elijah. Or the Apostle Paul — at least for the better part of his life. But then he said something very surprising to the modern reader.

He said: I wish that all were as I myself am. What a surprising statement! Everything about that statement agitates and disturbs the modern mind! The implications of that insight are absolutely staggering.
